ONE OF THE SACRISTY WINDOWS

COAT OF ARMS OF BISHOP MCLAUGHLIN

The Sacristy Windows were installed as part of Bishop Dougherty's renovations in the mid-1960s. Donated by Bishop Dougherty in honor of his parents, John and Katherine Dougherty, the windows were designed by Robert Robbins and executed by Rambusch Studios.

The windows depict the coats of arms of bishops closely associated with Seton Hall: Archbishops Bayley, Walsh, and Boland; and Bishops McQuaid and McLaughlin.

James Roosevelt Bayley was born on August 23, 1814. He was ordained priest in 1844, consecrated first bishop of Newark in 1853, appointed archbishop of Baltimore in 1872. He died in Newark on October 3, 1877. In 1856, he founded Seton Hall College. Bayley Hall is named in his honor.

Bernard John Joseph McQuaid was born on December 15, 1823. He was ordained priest in 1848 and consecrated bishop of Rochester, NY in 1868. He died on January 18, 1909. He served as president of Seton Hall College from 1856 to 1857, and from 1859 to 1868. McQuaid Hall is named in his honor. This window contains an error! Bishop McQuaid's motto in Latin is rendered incorrectly. It should read "Salus animarum suprema lex," "The Salvation of souls is the supreme law." Instead "Salvus" is in the place of "Salus."

Thomas Henry McLaughlin was born on July 25, 1881. He was ordained priest in 1904, consecrated auxiliary bishop of Newark in 1935, and appointed first bishop of Paterson in 1937. He died on March 17, 1947. He served as president of Seton Hall College and rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary from 1922 to 1933. He continued to serve as rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary until 1937. The former library building was named in his honor.

Thomas Joseph Walsh was born on December 6, 1873. He was ordained priest in 1900, consecrated bishop of Trenton in 1918, appointed bishop of Newark in 1928, and raised to the rank of archbishop of Newark in 1937. He died on June 6, 1952. Archbishop Walsh was a stalwart supporter of Seton Hall. The gymnasium is named in his honor.

Thomas Aloysius Boland was born on February 17, 1896. He was ordained priest in 1922, consecrated auxiliary bishop of Newark in 1940, appointed bishop of Paterson in 1947, and appointed archbishop of Newark in 1953. He retired in 1974 and died on March 16, 1979. Bishop Boland served as rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary from 1940 to 1947. Boland Hall is named in his honor.
