Giandomenico Picco, Personal Representative for the Secretary-General for the Dialogue among Civilizations addresses students on May 1, 2001
Giandomenico Picco To commemorate the halfway point of the UN Year of Dialogue among Civilizations, the School of Diplomacy welcomed Mr. Picco, who addressed the students on the Dialogue and his experiences as the UN chief hostage negotiator. A signing of Mr. Picco's acclaimed book, Man without a Gun, followed. The Day ended with a dinner hosted by the School's Board of Overseers honoring Mr. Picco's accomplishments.
Seton Hall Classes embrace the Dialogue among Civilizations
Picco, Annan, and others Mirroring the Dialogue among Civilizations undertaken by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the students of Seton Hall's School of Diplomacy and International Relations are fostering their own dialogues. Under the leadership of Ambassador Ahmad Kamal, the class Practice of Leadership prepared a collection of short essays focused upon their own intercultural experiences, and presented the first copy of this work to the Secretary-General during his visit to the campus on February 5, 2001.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan was presented with a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Seton Hall University on February 5, 2001. The Secretary-General delivered a major policy address to the University community on the Dialogue among Civilizations.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan appoints Dialogue Group

Annan and Picco

The Secretary-General has designated Giandomenico Picco, former chief hostage negotiator and Under Secretary General of the United Nations, to lead the Dialogue as his personal representative. The School of Diplomacy and International Relations has been working in close and intense collaboration with Mr. Picco, as the designated Secretariat for this project. Kofi Annan has appointed a group of eminent persons, distinguished by their profound life experiance and activism, to bring a diverse perspective to the large questions elicited by the Dialogue.
