Dr.
Richard von Weizsäcker
Dr.
von Weizsäcker is the former President of the Federal Republic
of Germany, serving a rare double term from 1984-1994. He was Chairman
of the Commission on Common Security and the Future of the German
Armed Forces until May 2000.
He
attended Oxford and Grenoble Universities, followed by Göttingen
University, where he studied law and history.
Dr.
von Weizsäcker was co-chairman of the Independent Working Group
on the future of the United Nations (1994-95). He was one of the Three
Wise Men who were requested by the President of the European Union,
Romano Prodi, to elaborate suggestions for an institutional reform of
the European Union in preparation for the integration of new member
states (1999). His memoirs have been published as From Weimar to
the Wall, My Life in German Politics (1999).
