Non-Profit Management and Social Entrepreneurship Module N1597

his module introduces students to management and organization in the non-profit sector. The diversity of the non-profit sectors and types of organizations (e.g. foundations, non-governmental organizations, and social enterprises) across different countries and institutional settings will be examined in a comparative and international perspective. The module draws on research, policy and practice to critically explore the management challenges of non-profit organizations and new ventures, and the relation between non-profit, public and business sectors, and civil society. The module discusses key theoretical perspectives and approaches of how non-profit organizations operate and are managed, and how to utilise social entrepreneurship to generate social change and impact through the creation of new ventures and mobilization of resources across organization and sector boundaries. It covers key issues in starting, growing, leading, managing, and governing non-profit organizations and new non-profit ventures. Major topics include: governance and accountability, strategy and strategic planning, non-profit financing and financial management, leadership and managing people, volunteering and civic engagement, alliances and networks, venturing and impact, technology and new media
NGOs in World Politics Module L2067S

There has been an enormous growth in the number of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) active around the world, especially since the end of the Cold War. This course explores the significance of this trend, and asks what representations and practices of world politics are produced and reproduced by NGO activity. Are NGOs a flexible, responsive form of actor well-suited to promoting human rights and development in a post-Cold War world? Are they irresponsible, unaccountable do-gooders impinging on states¿ abilities to do their jobs? Are they stooges of globalising capitalism, undermining local struggles for social justice? Or do they signal a transformation in the architecture of world politics, away from government and towards networked forms of governance? These ¿ and other ¿ accounts of the role of NGOs in world politics will be addressed in this course, requiring students to identify, understand and critique a variety of ways of conceptualising NGO activity in world politics. The course is divided into three broad sections: the history of NGOs; current issues regarding NGO activity; and conceptual approaches to the study of NGO activity. Within this, each week we take a broad theme that asks a ¿big¿ question about NGO activity and combine it with a focus on a particular NGO or issue. This will allow students to become familiar with (contemporary or historical) empirical forms of NGO activity whilst simultaneously thinking critically about the significance of NGO activity in general for world politics.

It combines perspectives from organization studies, management, economics, sociology, political science, and public policy. The first part of the module aims to develop insights into why public action is needed and how it is implemented including the governance of courses and projects, their budgeting and management, and the demonstration of their effectiveness. The second part of the module will examine the nonprofit sector. In addition to comparing the scope of activity, means of delivery and approaches to evaluation in this sector with the public sector, the second part of the module will examine the problems of mobilising support for nonprofit activities including fundraising, the enrolment of volunteers, and the role of professional staff. Seminars will develop more deeply the topics treated during the lectures by considering specific experience in both Anglo-American and more international contexts.ts.
