Course Information:

Fundraising and Resource Generation	Explores the importance of philanthropy in Canada and provide participants with the ability to apply various methods and practies of seeking donations and generating resources.
Social Administration and Policy Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Knowledge and skills required for understanding, analyzing and practicing social policy development and administration in social work. Political, economic, and social context of policymaking, theoretical perspectives for developing policy
Theories in Social Science and Social Work Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Examines relationships between theories in social science and in social work exploring connections to social work practice and emphasizing theories of inequality
History of Social Work and Social Welfare Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Historical development of social welfare policies and the Canadian welfare state. History of relationship of economy, family, welfare institutions and Canadian state.
Practicum I Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Integration of academic and practical aspects of social-work education. 500 hours of guided learning in a community-based setting. Field seminar required.
Community Work Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Models and methods of community organization. Social-economic contexts and ideological approaches to social change work; social change efforts; globalization and corporate rule.
Advanced Theory for Social Work Practice Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Advanced theory of the intersection of practice in direct intervention, community work, and social administration and policy, from a perspective of a range of structural inequalities.
Research and Evaluation in Social Work Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Addresses the logic of inquiry, and assesses quantitative and qualitative techniques. Attention to program and direct intervention evaluation especially with the use of action and participatory research approaches.
Practicum II Credit-Bearing Gradaute	500 hours integrating advanced social work theories and practice. Students are expected to build on and to develop beyond present knowledge and skills. Field seminar required.
Thesis Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Prerequisite: registration in M.S.W. Year II.
Social Policy Analysis Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Conceptual, theoretical, and empirical tools for the analysis of social policies in Canadian society.
Poverty and Income Security Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Examination of theories of poverty and wealth, conflicting understandings of poverty and the unequal distribution of income and wealth in Canada.
Women and Social Policy Credit-Bearing Gradaute	Structural analysis of social policy affecting women. Relationship of feminist scholarship to the practical w ork of developing policy and to policy outcomes for women.

Graduate Studies The School of Social Work offers an accredited master’s and a PhD in Social Work. Our programs encourage critical thinking and analysis of the structural barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential. We promote values of respect, dignity and the worth of all peoples to assist students in acquiring knowledge, skills, and values to work in diverse and cross-cultural environments and to support the development of social work as a field of critical practice and policy development. Master of Social Work Hand With TreesThe School of Social Work offers two points of entry into the Master of Social Work (MSW) program .Students who have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited program, or are in their final year of such a program, are eligible to apply to the Advanced Year of the program ( which takes 1 year to complete). Students who do not have a Bachelor of Social Work degree may apply to Foundation Year of the program (which takes 2 years to complete). The MSW program offers students an opportunity to focus on either direct intervention of social administration and policy or to combine these areas. As part of our program students may complete a practicum-based professional degree or take the more academically focused research option. We have connections with over 200 organizations that provide practicum opportunities for students. Students can also work with faculty members to develop to develop a research project exploring key theoretical and practical questions in social work. The MSW program is designed to orient students to a career in the field of social work.
