This unit will introduce the history, core concepts and current issues in the fields of philanthropy, fundraising and social enterprise.

This unit introduces the principles and practices of research as used in social enterprises, policy making and media campaigns. It is important that research design, execution and reporting be understood. Critical analysis will focus on the uses and abuses of research in grantmaking, fundraising and social enterprises.

Effective Personal and Family Grantmaking

This unit introduces students to the planning and operational aspects of social investment from individuals or families. Individual givers are located within a number of philosophical frameworks to account for their philanthropic behaviour. The complex and sensitive personal and cultural dimensions of private giving are explored to enable the identification of appropriate means for incorporating these into operational arrangements. The governance and legal obligations of alternative structures are analysed.

Philanthropy and Social Investment in the Asia-Pacific

Australia is a major contributor to the economic and social well-being of the Asia-Pacific. In a globalised world, national borders do not limit social investment especially with the continued growth of national diaspora. Grants may be made and interventions initiated in any country that effect practice or development in Australia. Sometimes national and cultural differences are relevant, sometimes not, but the increasing media attention to fundraising and grantmaking indicates a need to be able to examine social investment practices in a variety of geographic locations.
Social Enterprise Desktop Project

The aim of this project is for students to apply philanthropic and social enterprise theories in analysing a real life example of a social purpose activity. This component of the Philanthropy and Social investment program is designed to enable students to develop skills in defining research questions, collecting and analysing data and reporting on their results in a desktop research project.

This program is designed for individuals involved in - or contemplating involvement in - personal giving (whether as donors, trustees or advisers). It is also aimed at those working within NGOs, government, business, not-for-profit, philanthropic and related private sector agencies that provide and manage grants and/or raise funds for the wellbeing of Australian citizens: generally called 'philanthropy' or 'social investment'. It provides graduates with policy and applied research skills, conceptual development and technical management and new technology skills.
