Civil Society and Public Policy

This course looks at society as a system and focuses on the contributions of contemporary social theory to the understanding of social processes. Analytical perspectives: civil society, state, market. The institutional framework of modern civil societies: citizenship, rights and constitutionalism. The actors of civil society: associations, public and social movements. The concept of public policies. The analysis of public policies. The role of civil society organizations in the cycle of public policies.
Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Social Programs

The process of formulating social interventions. Participatory approaches in social planning. Logical framework as a tool for formulating and evaluating social interventions. Analysis of social problems and needs assessment. Program hypotheses and selection of intervention strategies. Evaluation of social interventions. What is the non-profit sector? How does one define the Third Sector? This course will explore the third Sector and civil society along with theories that explain the emergence and development of the Third Sector: Challenges of social organizations in a context of social fragmentation and conflict. Social Movements and Civil Society, the local and the global. Public-Private, debates on the provision of welfare, the role of the Third Sector. State and Civil Society Organizations. Incidence, participation and associated management. The social aspects of development: Social Capital. Social Economy and Third Sector. Social enterprises and other forms of association. Center for Social Innovation The mission of the Center for Social Innovation is to help strengthen the commitment and capacity of civil society organizations, entrepreneurs, companies, foundations and private donors to generate social impact investors and social transformation. To achieve this mission, the CIS develops academic training activities, training, production and dissemination of relevant knowledge and production of educational content.
