Choosing databases:

Pick an Appropriate Database http://academic.shu.edu/libraries/db/

Many topics require that you consult more than one database.

For example, if your topic is education, you most likely will want to use the ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) database, but also you might want to look at the psychology database PsycInfo as well. Or if you are doing research in psychology, you might want to look at ERIC because it has resources on developmental topics.

Communications students might want to look at ABI/INFORM Global (business), PsycInfo, or LEXIS-NEXIS (which has many full-text articles from major newspapers and journals).

For a topic in literature, use the MLA (Modern Language Association) Index, the Literature Resource Center, and/or Academic Search Premier EBSCOhost (a database that contains information on lots of topics).

If your topic is interdisciplinary, you might want to look at the list of databases in alphabetical order, because Seton Hall University Libraries subscribe to several databases that are very broad in focus, such as Academic Search Premier EBSCOhost and Lexis Nexis.

If you find that you are not getting any results, or are finding no information, perhaps you have chosen a database that does not suit your topic. Try searching in other databases.

Our University Libraries Databases are listed both in alphabetical order and by topic. In addition, at the lower part of the Databases page you will find descriptions of all the databases to which we subscribe. You can use these descriptions to help you determine the appropriate database for your research.
