Picking a topic:

Find something you are interested in

Your teacher has given you an assignment.  Be sure to find something that interests you or it will be a dreadful task. Your topic should be neither too broad  nor too narrow. You might want to look for encyclopedia articles or books on the general area surrounding your topic to see what to focus on. This way you can have a sense of how much information has been written on your topic.
Remember, very often the broader topic is harder to write about than a narrower one. At the same time, if you choose a topic that is too narrow, you might have difficulty finding enough information.
