Counseling Component

The counseling component helps students focus on their behavior patterns and various aspects of themselves which are essential to successfully negotiate their environment i.e.; understanding their culture and that of others, developing or further extending good interpersonal skills, identifying career/life goals, identifying resources, etc. It provides students with interpretative mechanisms to discuss their concerns and problems which revolve around the academic and social transition from high school to college and beyond. The counseling component guides students to an understanding of interrelationship between the academic and counseling components through activities that reinforce the two areas.

To this end the counseling component:

1. Provides support services designed to assist each student in developing and/or reinforcing a positive self-image, strong interpersonal skills, creative, critical and analytical thinking skills, goal setting, planning and achievement, problem solving techniques, effective communication, valve clarification, self-reliance, self-discovery and time management.

2. Provides each student with academic advisement, financial aid counseling, career counseling, and psychosocial counseling.

3. Provides the most recent information about academic programs, career opportunities and financial aid programs; and provides and encourages attendance at programs for academic, social, cultural, career, and personal development.

4. Develops a plan of action and profile on each student.

5. Interprets students' needs to faculty and administration by attending and participating in relevant departmental meetings.

6. Assesses students for referrals external to EOP and/or University.

7. Develops a comprehensive, holistic-oriented counseling program designed to address the unique needs of EOP students.
