Structured Study
The Center for Learning, Instruction &
Assessment (CLIA) offers "structured study" as one of its
innovative support services to EOP students in an
appropriate and interactive environment. By providing an
enabling environment where each student discovers the
answers to problems in the company of their peers, the
Center ensures that students become independent learners.
To understand the term Structured Study, we analyze the two
component words. Structured: A structured environment has a
certain configuration, a form. This means that certain
things are expected of the student: showing up and
conforming to laid-down rules of engagement. Study:
encompasses all intellectual activities from reading for
pleasure to analyzing complex equations. Therefore,
Structured Study says exactly what we do: provide students
with an enabling environment where they can study-and be
supervised.
Structured Study is a continuation of the learning process
where the students are expected to source out materials
themselves and ask for guidance as and when they deem fit.
For this reason, structured study sometimes encompasses
monitoring their progress.
There are two basic types of Structured Study:
Individual Structured Study: where students who lack
the discipline of working on their own study in a structured
environment and with some sustained supervision. Students
are recommended for these services based on academic
strength and a degree of structure and maturity.
Group Structured Study: where a facilitator/monitor
is available to monitor and help students where necessary.
This can be either in small group with a peer monitor, or a
large group with a professional as facilitator.
Students are expected to do their homework and assignments,
especially during the first-year summer program.
Facilitators are usually available to answer any questions
that may arise, especially within their area of specialty,
and facilitate problem-solving sessions or group processing
of assignments.
Specific structured study areas include:
-
Supplementary Reading Program
-
Dynamics of Student Development Study
-
Summer Program Structured Study
-
Content-specific studies
-
Honor Program Study Group
During the summer, this activities are highly structured and strictly monitored.
