Center for Learning, Instruction & Assessment (CLIA)
About CLIA Services
The Center for Learning, Instruction &
Assessment, sometimes referred to as "The Learning Center,"
offers innovative support services to EOP students in an
appropriate and interactive environment. College activities
and career opportunities in today’s changing workplace
require that students understand their own potentials and
weaknesses. This requirement is rarely addressed at the high
school level even though it is crucial to success in college
and beyond. The Center provides students with successful
educational experiences by not only identifying problem
areas, but also offering solutions.
The staff of the Center knows that the key to overcoming
academic difficulties lies both in recognizing the strengths
and weaknesses with which a student enters college and in
addressing the academic deficits that may impede success.
The success of this approach requires an interactive
environment where each student receives appropriate
attention. The Center is, first and foremost, a comfortable
educational environment geared towards helping each student
who walks through our doors. Our services cover the full
range of university course work, and the staff is dedicated
to ensuring that all our students become independent
learners striving for academic and personal excellence.
Learning Services
Our services are as varied as the expertise of
administrator/faculty and adjuncts. From diagnostic testing
and assessment through tutoring and teaching credit-bearing
courses to workshops, the Center for Learning, Instruction &
Assessment (CLIA) is committed to "be there" for students.
From extra assistance in a particular subject through
difficulty in taking notes, reading textbooks and taking
exams to adjusting to the demands of college life, CLIA
makes effective use of all resources to support EOP
students. Students receive hands-on knowledge of business
studies, English, history, psychology, Spanish, reading and
writing; and an advanced means of exploring complex
scientific problems in computer science, biology, chemistry,
mathematics and physics. The array of services offered is
better seen from the eyes of EOP students, who reflect its
impact in higher grades, broaden knowledge base, and mastery
of course content.
Students need only come to the Center on their own or at the
recommendation of a faculty member, an advisor or a
counselor. They fill out service in-take and assessment
form, and speak with a staff member. After consultation with
staff, the student will complete a support services
agreement form for placement services. Non-EOP students must
apply through the Student Support Services Program.
With professional, graduate and peer tutors, learning
facilitators and administrator/faculty of the Center for
Learning, Instruction & Assessment, makes every effort to
regularly accommodate all class schedules Monday through
Thursday from 9.00 AM to 6:00 PM and Friday from 9.00 AM to
5.00 PM. Students are accommodated after these hours and on
weekends by special arrangement. The staff’s varied
specialties mean that students needs are met easily,
effectively and efficiently.
