Our Mission

The Seton Hall Institute on Work (IOW) operates under the aegis of the Center for Catholic Studies. Its mission is to introduce and engage faculty, students and other constituencies of Seton Hall University with the Catholic perspective on work: its multiple meanings, how we can make our workplaces more communal and humane, and ultimately, how we can integrate the demands of our work into a more balanced and enriched life. Because work is the "key to the social question" (John Paul II, Laborem exercens), the Institute on Work also provides resources drawn from the Catholic social tradition that can help address in critical and positive ways the many social justice issues related to work: who gets work in our society? how well do we prepare people, particularly the next generation for the world of work? and how just are our workplaces?
