Summer Study
Abroad in Oxford, England
The Foundations
of Christian Culture:
History, Myth, Literature and Science
June 23
- July 8, 2007

"This Oxford, I
have no doubt, is the finest City in
the world." - John Keats
The Center for
Catholic Studies and the G. K. Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture are
sponsoring a three-credit study abroad course, The Foundations of Christian
Culture: History, Myth, Literature and Philosophy. The course lasts two weeks,
and consists of four academic units, interspersed with field trips, visits to
sites of historic importance and time for conversation and reading. Throughout
the program, there is an opportunity for daily prayer and reflection upon the
Christian life. The course is cross-listed for credit in Catholic Studies (CAST 3994SP),
English (ENGL 3413SP) or History (HIST4293SP).

Drawing from a variety
of resources, the course examines the origins and nature of Christian culture,
exploring in particular the value of culture itself as an aspect of human life and
Christian revelation. The program concentrates on writers from the European Catholic
tradition such as G.K. Chesterton, J.R.R. Tolkien, Bernard Lonergan, C.S. Lewis and
John Henry Newman.
The course offers some
answers, from one particular tradition, to perennial questions: How am I meant to
understand the world? How am I meant to understand myself? In addition to educational
insight, students are presented with an opportunity to build a community with their
colleagues and professors.
The Place
Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous for its
University and rich history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars.
Firmly established as an academic center by the 13th. century, Oxford is now a bustling
cosmopolitan town. With its splendid sites, colleges and museums blending with modern culture,
there is plenty for students to explore. Oxford has it all!
